Hangman's Noose

On Valaris, a human world isolated by its distance from the populated centres of the universe and also due to a space warp beyond the atmosphere, sorcery is forbidden. Even common legerdemain is outlawed. Any man, woman or child caught  doing magical tricks will be summarily strung from the nearest tree.

Human nature being what it is, however, means magic is not by any means dead. The art went underground...
